Most money advice wasn’t written for us
Search for how to start investing and you’ll find a thousand guides. Nearly all of them assume a US brokerage account, a 401(k) and a credit score. Useful, if that’s your life.
Less useful if you’re paid in cedis and want to know whether treasury bills beat a fixed deposit this quarter. Or if you’re in London trying to work out which service loses you the least money sending funds home. Or if you’re buying land in Ghana from three thousand miles away and have heard enough horror stories to be nervous.
Those questions have real answers. They’re just not answered well anywhere, because the big finance sites have no commercial reason to write about them.
That’s the gap SmartMoneyMint exists to fill.
Who runs this
Daniel Angate — Founder and Editor
I’m a web developer based in Takoradi, Ghana, with a bachelor’s degree in networking, and I run AniTech Ghana, a web development company.
I’ll be straight with you about what that does and doesn’t qualify me to do. I’m not a financial adviser and I’ve never worked in a bank. What I am is someone who got tired of searching for straight answers about money in Ghana and finding either recycled American advice or vague articles with no actual numbers in them.
So I started working things out properly and writing them down. My background is technical, and I’ve brought that habit here: check the primary source, show the figures, link to where they came from, and say plainly when I don’t know something. Every rate on this site traces back to the Bank of Ghana, the Ghana Revenue Authority, or the provider’s own published fees — with the date I checked it.
That’s the whole promise. Not expertise I don’t have, but research you can verify yourself.

What we cover
Ghana money. Treasury bills, mobile money fees, savings rates, the Ghana Stock Exchange, tax for freelancers — the practical mechanics of managing money here, with current figures rather than vague advice.
Diaspora finance. For Ghanaians in the UK, US and Canada: sending money home without losing a fortune to fees, opening accounts from abroad, buying property, investing back home. The questions that come up constantly in WhatsApp groups and almost nowhere else.
Earning and saving. Side hustles, remote work and freelance platforms — with honest numbers on what each actually pays, not what the marketing claims.
How we work
Everything here is written by us. No syndicated feeds, no republished articles. If it’s on this site, we wrote it and we stand behind it.
Every figure carries a source. Rates, fees and returns link back to the bank, provider or regulator they came from, with the date we checked. Financial content ages fast, and a guide with a stale rate is worse than no guide.
Guides get reviewed, not abandoned. Each article shows when it was last checked. Anything we can no longer stand behind gets updated or removed.
We test what we can. Where a guide covers an app or service, we use it first. Where we can’t, we say so rather than implying experience we don’t have.
How we make money
Openly, so you can weigh our advice accordingly.
Advertising. Ads on this site are served by Google AdSense. We don’t sell placements directly, and advertisers have no say in what we publish.
Affiliate commissions. Some links earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. They’re marked where they appear. We only link to things we’d recommend without the commission — and when a better option pays us nothing, we recommend the better option and say so.
We don’t accept paid guest posts, sponsored reviews, or link placements. If you’ve emailed about one, that’s why we didn’t reply.
What this site is not
I am not a licensed financial adviser, and nothing here is personal financial advice. This site explains how things work and what the numbers look like so you can decide for yourself. Significant decisions about your own money deserve a conversation with a licensed professional who knows your full situation.
